Shingles
Shingles can be constructed of many different materials. These will protect the outer roof from any inclement weather conditions.
Plumbing Vent
This pipe emerges from the roof, allowing air inside the plumbing system. This will allow wastewater to flow to the septic system or sewer.
Deflector
The deflector is a Styrofoam or cardboard insert that is between two roof rafters, allowing a free flow of air over the insulation. There must be a minimum of two inches of space under the decking.
Roof Vents
Enclosed and comprised of plastic or metal, the roof vents will feature openings to ensure the attic is ventilated. The best vents are typically open on all four sides, rising above roof level to produce a suction effect. An air inlet must be at the base of the roof.

Also known as Flashing, joint covers can be rigid or made of steel, plastic or aluminum. It will stop water from flowing near or to the openings of the roof. Flashing can be found in the base and valleys of roof vents, chimneys, walls and roof vents.

The drip edge is the moulding that covers the roof edge, reducing the water risk.
Valley
This is the “V-cut” angle along the junction of the roof’s two slopes.
Underlay Membrane
The protective membrane runs under some or all of the asphalt shingles. This is used to prevent any water infiltration, which can be caused by “ice dams” in the winter season.
Decking (Sheathing)
Constructed of half-inch plywood, the decking will reinforce and close the roof structure to provide a nailbed for the shingles.
Saddle
Located behind the higher side of the chimney, the saddle diverts rainwater around the area.
Attic
The attic is the space directly under the roof. To protect against excessive summertime heat, this area must be ventilated.
Ridge
This is simply the horizontal line atop the roof.
Roof Edge
These are all the boards along the edge of the eaves or roofing. This can also be referred to as fascia.
