Cedar and slate are the most expensive roofing materials used today. Despite the high price tag, though, both of these materials feature excellent strength and durability.
Cedar
Cedar shingles can be a good option if you are looking for a specific style of home. This material is commonly used on Cape Cod, colonial and other historically-styled homes or buildings. Cedar shakes have a great reputation for being extremely durable, lasting an average of 30-40 years, depending on quality of installation and inclement weather.
Even if the shingles last a long time, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll keep their high-end appearance forever. Cedar can be very susceptible to damage as a roofing material, unfortunately. Wood will burn and rot easily, so it is recommended to have cedar shakes treated specifically to ensure they are as water and fire-resistant as possible. Cedar shakes can be up to six times more expensive than asphalt shingle.
How Much Does A Cedar Shake Roof Cost?
According to HomeAdvisor, it costs between $18,000-$20,000 to install a 3,000-square foot shake roof. The highest possible cost for installation is $27,000. This comes out to about $635 per square.
Slate
Slate is undoubtedly the most expensive roofing material used today. It is actually over ten times more expensive than asphalt shingle roofing. Since slate is stone, it does provide incredible durability, with an average life expectancy of 60-200 years. However, stone can become brittle and less resistant to impact over time, which could decrease its lifespan.
One other issue that pops up with slate is slipping. This occurs when tiles simply slip out of place after installation. Low-quality manufacturing techniques are often the cause of slipping.
How Much Does A Slate Roof Cost?
Modernize says the average installation cost of a slate tile roof is between $11,550-$24,000. Homeowners can expect to pay anywhere from $9-$16 per square foot or $900-$1,600 per square.
