There are three primary types of gutters:, Half-Round, K-Style, and Box gutters. Each of them come in different materials, like Copper Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, and Vinyl. Below is a closer look at each style and what they are mainly used for.
Half-Round Gutter
These gutters are used in older or historic styled houses. They are perfectly named, as they are half of a round pipe with the top-half opened for water. They are known to be more rustical because they are typically made out of copper in which produces a patina over time. Nevertheless, they also come in Aluminum, Galvanized Steel, or Vinyl. As with K-style gutters, these are available in 5 inch and 6 inch sizes.
These gutters are installed somewhat differently than traditional gutters. First, mounts are installed to the home along the roofs edge. Once the mounts are put in place, the gutter gets dropped into place and secured. It needs to be noted that gutters made out of Copper, are a lot heavier than Aluminum ones, so they require added hardware to keep them secured to the house.
The half circle shape leads to the inner portion of the gutter being completely smooth. Being smooth on the inside does offer a couple of advantages. First off, the metal is less likely to corrode or rust since there is nowhere for it to pool or stand still. Furthermore, because there are no hardware or folds in the inside, debris has a clear pathway and is less probable to get caught on something and create a clog.
K-Style Gutter
K-Style gutters are the most general type of gutter that you will see on today’s homes. This gutter has a distinct shape on the front edge resembling today’s home’s crown molding. So, these gutters are going to compliment your homes look. Actually, a lot of homeowners are going to choose a color of K-Style Gutter that compliments or accentuates their house’s trim and/or shutters.
They come with a flat back, so they’re installed to the fascia’s board trim that is around the top most edge of the house. Have it being flush against the wall guarantees that water is not going to run down your walls. The folds and bends in their design provide a strong structure, so these gutters are going to endure more damage than a half-round styles.
Box Style Gutters
The third most favorable style of gutter that you’ll see today, is the Box Style gutter. These are larger gutters that are mainly used for industrial or commercial buildings. They are designed to handle considerable amounts of water, from more immense roofs. The larger your roof is, the more water output.
Box gutters are not installed on the edge of the roof like conventional gutters. They feature a high back area that tucks underneath the shingles on your roof. As a result, they are required to be installed when the building is being constructed. This guarantees that no water can get into the building along the roof line. These can be installed on to older buildings, but the roof would have to be re-roofed in order to do so.
